Perception & Positivity

Perception is the lens through which we interpret the world around us. It shapes our thoughts, emotions, and actions, ultimately defining our reality. However, perception is not entirely immune to external influences. Negativity, in particular, can wield a significant impact on how we perceive the world.

Positivity is a powerful force that can profoundly influence our perception of the world. By adopting a positive mindset, we can transform our outlook on challenges, enhance empathy, and cultivate resilience. The impact of positivity extends beyond our personal lives and seeps into our relationships and overall well-being.

Conversely, negativity can wield an equally powerful influence on how we perceive the world, affecting our thoughts, emotions, and behaviours. By recognizing the impact of negativity and employing strategies to counter its effects, we can foster a more balanced and positive perception of the world around us. Remember, with conscious effort, we can choose to see the glass as half full rather than half empty.

Is the ‘dark side’ stronger?

To quote Master Yoda “No, no. Quicker, easier, more seductive.” We all love a good heartbreak, lost or unrequited love song and we are easily seduced by their power, the key is to realise when it has become too powerful.

Mitigating the Influence of Negativity on Perception

Practice Mindfulness: Becoming aware of our thoughts and emotions through mindfulness techniques can help identify negative patterns and prevent them from hijacking our perception. It is important to acknowledge negative thoughts and look to their root - understand why it makes you feel that way rather than let it take over.

Challenge Negative Thoughts: When negative thoughts arise, question their validity. Look for evidence that contradicts them and try to reframe the situation in a more balanced perspective. Shift your focus from dwelling on the problem to seeking solutions. Positive individuals actively look for ways to overcome obstacles, which influences their perception of the situation.

Surround Yourself with Positivity: With the world we live in, the news can make for harrowing reading and it can be all too easy to get sucked in. Social media too can add huge pressure on you  - what you should be doing / listening to / wearing… Limit exposure to negative media or toxic environments. Seek out positive influences and spend time with supportive, optimistic individuals. Make time in your week to head out with good friends or simply do something you love.

Practice Gratitude: Regularly acknowledging and appreciating the positive aspects of life can shift the focus away from negativity. Take time each day to reflect on the things you are grateful for, no matter how small.

erik-mclean-positivity-unsplashBy refocusing, by understanding how and why you feel negative and focusing more on positivity, you will naturally start to build greater emotional resilience - strengthening your ability to bounce back from setbacks and disappointments. Welcome a positive feedback loop into your life, not a negative one. Our perception (influenced by emotion) affects everything from personal relationships to business decisions, even our physical health.

There are times when even the most optimistic and upbeat of us will succumb to ‘negative’ emotions - that doesn’t mean they are not valid but allowing them to dwell will lead to their greater influence. Embracing positivity as a guiding principle allows us to embrace the beauty of life, see the good in others, and navigate through life's ups and downs with grace and optimism.

If you are struggling with personal negative emotions and are finding it difficult to express yourself or are finding it difficult to continue as ‘normal’, please never be afraid to ask for help. If you cannot turn to a friend or family member then here is a link for UK services which can and will help. Remember, asking for help is not a sign of failure but rather a sign of courage.
