Fairtrade fortnight (not Fortnite!)

Whilst both feature bananas and both could be defined as social, only one fortnight is aimed at changing the ethical balance in the trading of goods and services.

banana

Whilst both feature bananas and both could be defined as social, only one fortnight is aimed at changing the ethical balance in the trading of goods and services.

For most, the ‘Fairtrade’ banana is possibly still the first product that springs to mind at the mention of the Fairtrade Foundation despite the many certified products that are now available here in the UK – chocolate, sugar, flowers, wine, coffee, tea, clothes… In the foundation’s own words:

Fairtrade is a system of certification that aims to ensure a set of standards are met in the production and supply of a product or ingredient. For farmers and workers, Fairtrade means workers’ rights, safer working conditions and fairer pay. For shoppers it means high quality, ethically produced products.

Choosing Fairtrade means standing with farmers for fairness and equality, against some of the biggest challenges the world faces. It means farmers creating change, from investing in climate friendly farming techniques to developing women in leadership.

With Fairtrade you change the world a little bit every day. Through simple shopping choices you are showing businesses and governments that you believe in fair and just trade.

The idea of Fairtrade Fortnight is to further promote the aims of the foundation and encourage the wider public to think more carefully about the choices they make as consumers. With the sharp focus lately on the rise in cost of living for many across the world, not just the UK, making better choices in how we spend has perhaps never been so important.

For more information about the activities over 2022’s ‘choose the world you want festival’ follow the link to the Fairtrade Foundation page.

Whilst my household already attempts to be ethical and sustainable in its consumer choices and PacSol as a company support initiatives such as FairTrade, that doesn’t mean during this fortnight we might not find something different to try or be able to improve further for the greater good of planet earth and its inhabitants.

Perhaps Epic Games might even see if they can get Peely certified?
