ImageView is a document management system that runs on the IBM i platform and enables you, without the need for any additional programming, to integrate documents from a variety of sources with the IBM i business application such that you can access and display these documents whilst working with the application.
Because we rarely access our line-of-business applications in isolation, we nearly always need to look at documents of all kinds – real paper images, emails, etc. – at the same time. ImageView folios (or folders) provide another big benefit. Paper files only allow you to define certain file classifications, by application and subject under which documents and images can be filed.
However, ImageView lets you index the same image in many folios so that you can retrieve it by different keys. For example, an invoice may be found in the accounts folio for that customer and also in the customer folio itself.

You simply define the screens or data displays in your application from which you want to show or attach documents and ImageView will automatically find the link between what’s shown on the workstation screen and the related image, document or report.
This means you can simply access, for example, a sales invoice and its associated POD from the application screen to which they relate. Anyone in the organisation using the IBM i platform from a PC can, if they have the appropriate authorisation, see these images and documents, or add more to the collection.
Creating and Saving Images
With the use of a scanner, you may scan in images and documents into a batch or directly into the application folio.
Documents such as Reports, created on the IBM i platform, may be automatically incorporated (even down to just the individual page such as an invoice) into the same folio.
The Windows client attaches directly to the IBM i platform via your network and is a universal interface between your application(s) and all the documents you may need whilst using the application (emails, faxes, MS Word etc.).

ImageView eliminates the main problem associated with traditional document imaging systems – that of indexing. ImageView itself determines how to index an image by reading the data displayed on the IBM i workstation screen and selecting the relevant data field (the customer name or number perhaps) or by setting up the relevant index when scanning the documents in.
There are many automatic indexing and data capture techniques available including OCR, ICR, OMR and bar coding. ImageView stores all documents and images just once, but lets you and your colleagues have simultaneous access to them.
Optical Disk – Safe, Permanent
The preferred storage device to store images and documents on is the Optical Disk. This well proven device attaches directly to the iSeries and can store vast amounts of data permanently (unerasable WORM storage) at a relatively low cost.
For many organisations, it is vital that certain business records can be retrieved seven years or more after filing and this technology provides that access in a safe and permanent way.
Other media types are supported for archive or backup in conjunction with Optical disk (such as Tape devices) and data may also be stored directly on AS/400 DASD itself.
